Genesis 7
Icebreaker
Noah spent decades building a boat under a clear sky while the whole neighborhood watched and wondered. When have you kept doing something you believed was right even though no one around you understood it — and what kept you going?
Discussion Questions
- 1
Read Genesis 7:1. Before Noah lifts a tool in this chapter, God calls him “righteous before me” and tells him to come in. James said it plainly: grace comes first, then obedience follows. Where are you still trying to earn a standing with God that, in Christ, He has already given you? What would change this week if you worked from being accepted instead of for it?

Read Genesis 7:4-5. God gives a seven-day countdown to a flood no one can see yet, and “Noah did all that the LORD had commanded him.” He obeyed before the evidence arrived. Where is God asking you to do the next faithful thing while the reasons are still out of sight? What makes that kind of obedience so hard?

Read Genesis 7:23 — “Only Noah was left.” James admitted this is a hard chapter, then said, “A God who never judges cannot be perfectly good.” Does God's justice unsettle you or comfort you? Be honest — and notice what your honest answer reveals about where you are standing.

James said, “All we have is really today,” and told us Jesus means that as honesty, not a scare tactic. If today were truly the only day you were given, what would you stop putting off with God, or with the people He has put in front of you? Name one thing — and let the group help you actually do it.

Read Genesis 7:16 — “and the LORD shut him in.” Noah did not reach up and bolt his own door against the water; God sealed it. James said the ark did not save Noah — God did, from the first plank to the final latch. Where are you straining to hold your own salvation shut by effort, when the One who opened the door is the One who keeps it closed and safe?

James ended where Genesis always points: there was one ark, and there is one Savior; the ark had one entrance, and Jesus said, “I am the door.” How does seeing Christ in this chapter change the way you'll read the hard parts of the Bible? And who in your life is standing outside a door God has already opened — someone you could invite in this week, not to win an argument, but because you know where the door is?
