What “Reformed” and “confessional” actually mean
Reformed churches trace their convictions to the Protestant Reformation of the sixteenth century, and to the conviction that ran through it: salvation is God's work from beginning to end, received by faith, and not earned by anything we bring.

The Presbyterian Church in America was founded in 1973 by congregations leaving the Presbyterian Church in the United States, over the authority of Scripture. The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) was formed a decade later, in 1983, when two other Presbyterian bodies merged. The PCA is the older of the two names, and it did not leave the PCUSA — the PCUSA did not yet exist.
The practical difference today is how each body treats the Bible and its confessions. The PCA holds to the inerrancy of Scripture and requires its ministers to subscribe to the Westminster Standards.
