Genesis 6

Icebreaker

James made us laugh about how fast we judge — a soggy sandwich, a slow line, the driver ahead of us. What is something small you caught yourself passing instant judgment on this week? What does that quickness say about us?

Discussion Questions

  1. 1

Read Genesis 6:5–6. The text does not say God was angry; it says the wickedness of the world 'grieved Him to His heart.' James said this is the ache of a Father who made a good world and watched His children wreck it. How does it change the way you carry your own sin to know it grieves God because He loves you, not because He is done with you?

  2. 2

Read Genesis 6:8. The whole earth has been declared corrupt and judgment handed down — and then: 'But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.' James was clear that Noah received this favor, he did not earn it. Where are you still trying to earn a standing with God that, in Christ, He has already freely given you? What would it feel like to stop?

  3. 3

Read Genesis 6:9. Noah is called righteous, blameless, a man who walked with God — and yet, James reminded us, flip a few chapters and this same man ends up drunk and broken. Are you waiting until your record is clean to walk closely with God? What would it mean to walk with Him right in the middle of your limp?

  4. 4

Read Genesis 6:11–14 and Hebrews 11:7. The earth was 'filled with violence,' and into that God handed Noah a hammer and a blueprint. 'By faith Noah… constructed an ark.' Faith, for Noah, looked like obedient work in a culture going the other way. Where is God asking you to live and build faithfully right now in a corner of the world that has clearly corrupted its way?

  5. 5

Read Genesis 6:22. Noah built for decades under a clear sky, and only eight people boarded the ark — by every worldly metric, a failure, 'yet Noah did all that God commanded him.' James said we are not called to be successful, we are called to be faithful. What has God clearly asked of you that you keep postponing because it does not yet look like it is 'working'?

  6. 6

Read Genesis 6:18. Right in the middle of a judgment chapter, God makes a promise and gives the exact dimensions of rescue: 'you shall come into the ark.' Before the first raindrop, there is a door, and God is the one who begins it. Where do you most need to hear that God is for you — that before condemnation He has already built a way through?
