God Remembered Noah · Group Guide
Genesis 8
Icebreaker
Noah and his family waited the better part of a year on a boat, with no sign the water was going down. Tell us about a time you had to wait far longer than you expected for something to change — and what the waiting did to you.
Discussion Questions
- 1
Read Genesis 8:1. After a year adrift, the whole story turns on three words: “But God remembered Noah.” Kent said that when the Old Testament says God remembers someone, it does not mean He had forgotten — it means He is moving to show grace. Where in your life do you need to trust that God has already remembered you in mercy, even though nothing has visibly changed yet?
- 2
“And the LORD shut him in.” Noah did not close the door — God did. When has being shut into something you did not choose turned out to be safety?
- 3
Read Genesis 8:11. The dove comes back with one freshly plucked olive leaf — not the whole coastline, just a single living sign that the waters were receding. Where could you look for your “olive leaf” this week — one small sign that God is at work — instead of waiting to see the whole thing before you trust Him?
- 4
Read Genesis 8:16-17 — God repeats the Genesis 1 mandate, be fruitful and multiply, because His purposes were only delayed by the flood, never stopped. Kent put it bluntly: “God will accomplish His purposes with us or without us.” Where is God inviting you to get on board with what He is already doing, rather than be left standing on the shore?
- 5
The first thing Noah does on dry ground is build an altar, not a house. What would it look like for you to do the grateful thing before the practical one?
- 6
Read Ephesians 2:8-9. Kent ended on Reformation Sunday’s one truth: the ark carried Noah through, but it never saved him — the grace of God did, and for us it is the blood of Christ. Are you still trusting the “ark” of your own effort, your church attendance, your good record, to save you — or are you resting in the grace that already has? Be honest about which one you actually lean on when you are afraid.
