Caleb — Numbers 13:30

God is bigger than our fears

The Big Idea

Memory Verse

"Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it."

Caleb says it to a room that has already decided against him.

Conversation Starters

For the dinner table or the car line this week.

  1. What is something you are afraid of that is genuinely real?
  2. What is something you worried about that turned out smaller than it felt?
  3. What makes a fear feel smaller for you?

Family Activity · 15 min

Actual Size

Everybody names one thing they are worried about, and then answers two questions about it out loud: what is the worst that actually happens, and who would still be here afterwards. Write the second answer down. The exercise is not to decide the fear is silly — some of them are not. It is to find out its real size, which is almost always smaller than the size it has been running at.

Pray Together

God, you are bigger than the thing I am afraid of. Help me remember that on Tuesday.

What We Did Sunday

We learned that God is bigger than our fears. Twelve men looked at the same country and came back with two different reports — and the ten who said no were not lying about what they saw.

What they learned Sunday

Two out of twelve, and the ten were not lying

Twelve men went to look at the land. They came back agreeing about the country — it was good, the grapes were enormous — and disagreeing entirely about whether they could go in. Ten described giants and said no. Caleb said go, at once, we are well able. The lesson was careful about this: the ten were not cowards and they were not making it up. They saw real walls and real people. The difference is what they measured them against. The ten compared the giants to themselves and said they felt like grasshoppers. Caleb compared them to God.

  • How many said go?
  • Were the ten lying about what they saw?
  • What is something that looks different depending on what you compare it to?

Twelve men. Same country. Two reports.

Sunday night

Numbers 13:30

But Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.”

Around the table

This Sunday: twelve men look at the same country and see two different things.

When have you and somebody else looked at the same thing and completely disagreed about it?

They came back with one bunch of grapes that took two men and a pole. The place was everything they had been promised — and there were also giants.

What is something that was wonderful and frightening at the same time?

Nothing to prepare tonight.

Today they learned that God is bigger than our fears — and that the ten spies who said no were not lying about what they saw.

How many of the twelve said go?

Ten said no, two said go. The ten were not cowards. They reported real walls and real cities. What differed was what they thought God would do about it.

What is something you are afraid of that is genuinely real?

The fear grew in the telling. By the end of the report the ten were describing themselves as grasshoppers.

What is something you worried about that turned out smaller than it felt?

Wednesday asked what to do when the fear feels bigger than God, and did not dodge it. A balloon got blown up one worry at a time and then let down one verse at a time.

What makes a fear feel smaller for you?

This week's mission

Name it out loud

Tell one person this week about something you are scared of. Out loud, in words, specific enough that they could repeat it back. That is the whole assignment. A fear you can say in a sentence is already a different size than one you cannot.
