The Rescue — Exodus 14:13-14
God wants what's best for us
The Big Idea
Memory Verse
"The LORD will fight for you, and you have only to be silent."
Moses says it while the army is still coming. Not afterwards.
Conversation Starters
For the dinner table or the car line this week.
- What is something you wanted that would not have been good for you?
- What is something good that took much longer than you wanted?
- Who fights for you?

The Standing-Up Meal
Eat one meal this week standing up, coats on, like the Israelites did the night they left. No plates on laps, no sitting down, ten minutes maximum. It will feel ridiculous. While you are standing, everybody answers one question: if we had to leave this house in ten minutes and could each carry one thing, what would it be? Keep the answers. Read them out at Christmas.
Pray Together
God, when I do not understand what you are doing, help me trust that you know what is best.
What We Did Sunday
We learned that God wants what is best for us. Not that God gives us what we ask for — the lesson is careful about that. The Israelites got out of Egypt, and the road out went through a sea.
What they learned Sunday
They asked to go back to being slaves
They had watched Egypt come apart. They had walked out with everything they owned. Then they turned around, saw chariots on the horizon, and told Moses they would rather have stayed. Moses answered that the LORD would fight for them and they had only to be silent — and he said it while the army was still coming, before anything had changed. Then a strong east wind blew all night, and by morning there was dry ground. The Bible Point today was harder than "God rescues people." It was that God wants what is best for us — and the lesson was careful to say that best is not the same as easy. Four hundred years of slavery, one night of wind, and bread with no time to rise.
- What was in front of them, and what was behind them?
- Why do you think they wanted to go back?
- What is something you wanted that would not have been good for you?

Four hundred years, and then one night.
Sunday night
Exodus 14:13-14
And Moses said to the people, “Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again. The LORD will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.”
Around the table
This Sunday: the night they left. They ate standing up, coats on, because the door was about to open and there would not be a second invitation.
If you had ten minutes to leave the house forever, what would you carry?
Sunday opens with a question worth having a real answer ready for: what is something you would love to have that you know would be bad for you?
What is something you want that would not be good for you?
Nothing to prepare tonight. Tomorrow there is a sea in it. Let it be new.
Today they learned that God wants what is best for us — and the lesson was careful to say that best is not the same as what we asked for.
What did the people say when they saw the army coming?
Moses said the LORD would fight for them while the chariots were still coming. Not afterwards, when it was obvious. Before.
When is it hardest for you to be quiet?
It took all night. A strong east wind, blowing until morning. The rescue was real and it was also slow, and those are not opposites.
What is something good that took much longer than you wanted?
Wednesday asked the hard version: how does God even know what is best? They worked it from the other end — whoever made a thing knows what is good for it.
What is something you made or built or grew, and what did you know about it that nobody else did?
This week's mission
Ask before you decide it is bad
Something this week is going to go the way you did not want. When it does, before you decide it is a disaster, wait one day and ask one question: is there a version of this where it turns out to be the better road? You do not have to believe the answer yet. Just ask it.
