We know the right name. *How deeply are you rooted?* That one is answered by weather, not by words. Roots are invisible by design. Nobody admires them. You cannot photograph them or post them. They do their work in the dark, slowly, on a timescale that has nothing to do with how quickly you would like to be a different person. "The elemental spirits of the world" is a strange phrase, and it is worth knowing what sits underneath it. The Greek word is *stoicheia* — literally, *things lined up in a row*. The ABCs. Not a representative sample. All of God, in a body, in history, with a name. Second: *and you have been filled in him*. Past tense. Already done. Not something to work toward on a better week. Paul is describing a document. An itemized record of debt, legally binding, with your name at the top and your own hand at the bottom. Most of us keep a copy. We can produce it quickly — the thing said in anger, the year we would like back, the pattern we have confessed so many times we have stopped believing the confession. We do not always call it a ledger. We just call it knowing ourselves. God's answer to that document was not to argue about the line items. Icebreaker

Think of something you have done for years — a job, a skill, a hobby. What is one "basic" you still have to consciously remind yourself of, even now? Share it around the room, then talk about why the basics are the first thing we assume we have outgrown.

Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

Lord Jesus, in you the whole fullness of God dwells, and in you we have been filled. Teach us to stop shopping for what you have already given. Send our roots down deeper than our feelings go, and make us people who abound in thanksgiving — not because life is easy, but because the record is cancelled. Amen.
