Port Is Left, Starboard Is Right

"Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him,"

— Colossians 2:6

There was a naval commander who had served for decades. Every morning on the bridge his men watched the same ritual: a key from his pocket, a bottom drawer unlocked, a sealed box, a combination spun, an envelope, another key. He would unfold a single piece of paper and stare at it for thirty seconds.

On the paper was written: *Port is left. Starboard is right.*

Decades of service. Still needed the basics.

That is not a story about a foolish man. It is a story about an honest one. Paul writes to a church that is being told Jesus was a fine place to *start* — and now it is time for something more advanced. His answer is not a more advanced teaching. It is a return to the first thing: *as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him.*

How did you receive him? Not by being impressive. By admitting you had nothing and taking what he gave. That is also how you walk.

There is no graduation from the gospel. The Christian life is not received one way and then sustained another. Whatever is out ahead of you this week, you will meet it the same way you met him at the beginning — with open hands.

Pray

Father, I am not past needing you. Bring me back to the simple thing I first believed, and let me walk today the way I first received — with nothing in my hands but what you gave. Amen.

Reflect

What basic truth about Jesus have you quietly assumed you have outgrown?

Where Are You Rooted?

"rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving."

— Colossians 2:7

Kent asked two questions on Sunday, and the second one is the harder of the two.

*Where are you rooted?* Most of us can answer that. We know the right name.

*How deeply are you rooted?* That one is answered by weather, not by words.

Roots are invisible by design. Nobody admires them. You cannot photograph them or post them. They do their work in the dark, slowly, on a timescale that has nothing to do with how quickly you would like to be a different person. And you find out how deep they went only when something leans hard on the trunk.

Notice Paul's grammar. *Rooted* is something already done to you — God's work, finished. *Built up* and *established* are ongoing. You are not working toward being accepted; you are building on ground that already holds.

So the honest question is not whether you are rooted. If you are in Christ, you are. The question is what you are sinking into him — attention, obedience, time, the parts of your life you would rather keep in your own hands.

Nothing grows deep in a hurry. It grows deep on purpose.

Pray

Lord, you have rooted me in Christ. Now do the slow work. Send my roots down further than my feelings go, so that what I believe holds when it is tested. Amen.

Reflect

What in your life is currently testing how deep your roots actually go?

Put the Blocks Away

"See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ."

— Colossians 2:8

"The elemental spirits of the world" is a strange phrase, and it is worth knowing what sits underneath it. The Greek word is *stoicheia* — literally, *things lined up in a row*. The ABCs. The building blocks.

Kent drew the picture: wooden alphabet blocks on the floor, a child stacking them into words. Good and right — for a four-year-old.

Paul's point about the false teaching creeping into Colossae is not mainly that it is wicked. It is that it is *small*. You have Christ, in whom the whole fullness of God lives — and you are down on the carpet arranging blocks.

This is why false hope is so hard to spot. It rarely arrives announcing itself as a lie. It arrives as an upgrade. A technique, a system, a discipline, a philosophy that promises the thing you already have in Christ, only more efficiently. It is not usually evil. It is usually just juvenile.

So Paul says: *see to it.* Watch. Not because you are fragile, but because captivity almost never feels like captivity at the start. It feels like progress.

Grow up into him. Put the blocks away.

Pray

Father, I have settled for small things while holding something infinite. Show me where I am playing with blocks, and grow me up into Christ. Amen.

Reflect

What has been quietly offering you something you already have in Christ?

You Have Already Been Filled

"For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority."

— Colossians 2:9-10

Read that again slowly, because Paul puts two enormous claims side by side and the second one is about you.

First: in Jesus, *the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily*. Not a portion. Not a representative sample. All of God, in a body, in history, with a name.

Second: *and you have been filled in him*.

Past tense. Already done. Not something to work toward on a better week.

Most of the false hopes we chase are variations on one belief — that we are not enough yet. So we go looking for the missing piece, and there is always something on offer. A discipline, a teacher, an experience, a version of ourselves we are sure is just out of reach.

Paul's answer is not *try harder to be filled*. It is that the filling already happened, in Christ, and what you are missing is not more of God but a clearer sight of what you were given.

You are not a Christian who is running low. You are a Christian who has been filled by the One who holds all rule and authority.

That changes what today needs to be.

Pray

Lord Jesus, in you the fullness of God dwells, and in you I have been filled. Teach me to stop shopping for what you have already given. Amen.

Reflect

Where are you still living as though something essential is missing?

The Record Was Nailed Down

"And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross."

— Colossians 2:13-14

Paul is describing a document. An itemized record of debt, legally binding, with your name at the top and your own hand at the bottom.

Most of us keep a copy. We can produce it quickly — the thing said in anger, the year we would like back, the pattern we have confessed so many times we have stopped believing the confession. We do not always call it a ledger. We just call it knowing ourselves.

God's answer to that document was not to argue about the line items. It was to cancel it, and to cancel it publicly. *Nailing it to the cross.* Driven through, held up where everyone could see, settled where it could not be quietly reopened.

And Paul's response to all this, back in verse 7, is *abounding in thanksgiving.* Chesterton said that thanks are the highest form of thought, and gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder. Kent put the alternative bluntly: a life whose philosophy is *whatever you do for me is not enough, whatever you ask of me is too much* is a guaranteed formula for misery.

The cancelled record is why gratitude is not a mood. It is the only reasonable response to what has actually happened to you.

Pray

Father, you did not negotiate my debt. You cancelled it and nailed it to the cross. Make me a grateful person — not because life is easy, but because that is finished. Amen.

Reflect

What entry on your record are you still carrying that Christ has already cancelled?
