Wolves in Sheep's Clothing

"“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves."

Matthew 7:15 · ESV

"Beware." When you see a warning sign you generally pay attention. If it says beware of dog, you definitely pay attention, because if there is a guard dog behind that fence you want to know before you open the gate. Jesus is putting up a sign. And here is why the warning is necessary: if a wolf dressed like a wolf, nobody would follow it. False teachers do not arrive with horns and a pitchfork. They arrive looking like shepherds. They sound spiritual. They use religious language. They gather a following. John Calvin put it bluntly — nothing is more dangerous than a wolf pretending to be a shepherd. That is not a reason to live suspicious of everyone. Cynicism is its own kind of captivity. It is a reason to stay awake, and to know the true Shepherd's voice well enough that a counterfeit sounds off to you. You do not learn to spot a fake by studying fakes. You learn by knowing the real thing.

Father, thank you for loving me enough to warn me. Keep me alert without making me cynical, and make me so familiar with the voice of Jesus in your Word that anything counterfeit sounds wrong to me. Amen.

Look at the Fruit

"You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?"

Matthew 7:16 · ESV

Jesus gives a test, and it is refreshingly simple. Not their doctrine statement. Not their platform. Not their following. Their fruit. "Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?" A thornbush can be impressive. It can be large, established, thriving. But you cannot eat it. Over enough time, what a life actually produces becomes impossible to hide — and time is the ingredient. Fruit is slow. That is precisely why it is a reliable test and a first impression is not. So look at the fruit. What does this person's leadership produce in the people closest to them? Are the people around them becoming more like Jesus — humbler, gentler, freer — or more anxious, more controlled, more dependent on the leader? And then, harder: turn the test around. It is a diagnostic, not just a filter. What is growing on your branches this year that was not there last year?

Apply the fruit test to your own life, not just to others. What are the people closest to you actually harvesting from knowing you?

Pray

Lord, give me discernment about the voices I follow, and honesty about my own fruit. Let the people closest to me be better off for knowing me. Grow something in me this year that feeds somebody. Amen.

Jim Jones and the Long Game

"So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit."

Matthew 7:17 · ESV

In the 1970s a man named Jim Jones claimed to be a Christian leader and a prophet, and at first he looked like he was doing a great deal of good. He adopted children of several races while segregation was still common. He served the poor. He opened a church and spoke about justice. People trusted him. A Stanford-trained lawyer gave up his career to follow him. A Sunday school teacher who had taught faithfully for forty years left everything for his movement. That is how convincing he was. But over time the fruit of his life and leadership told the truth, and in the end more than nine hundred people died at Jonestown for following his voice instead of the Word of God. Jesus' warning has held up. You cannot always judge a tree by its appearance. The leaves can look healthy. The branches can look strong. Every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit — and the difference shows up on a timeline longer than our attention span. Give it time. Truth keeps. So does rot.

Where are you making a judgment based on a first impression that really needs the test of time?

Pray

Father, protect your church from those who use your name for their own ends, and protect me from being easily impressed. Give me patience to watch for fruit rather than being swayed by appearances. Amen.

By Their Fruits You Will Know Them

"Thus you will recognize them by their fruits."

Matthew 7:20 · ESV

Jesus says it twice, verse 16 and verse 20, bookending the whole warning. Repetition in Scripture is not padding. It is emphasis. "Thus you will recognize them by their fruits." He is making discernment accessible. He does not tell his followers to acquire a theology degree, run a background check, or wait for an expert's verdict. He gives them a test any ordinary person can apply: watch what grows. Which means you are not helpless here. You may not be able to evaluate somebody's credentials. You can absolutely notice whether the people around them are flourishing or shrinking. You can notice whether the money is clear or murky. You can notice whether correction is welcome or punished. Discernment is not a spiritual gift reserved for a few. In this passage it is basic Christian equipment, and Jesus expects you to use it. He is not asking you to be harsh. He is asking you to be awake.

What have you noticed and talked yourself out of because you did not feel qualified to judge? What would it look like to take your own observation seriously?

Pray

Lord, thank you that you gave your people a test we can actually use. Make me watchful without becoming harsh, and give me courage to trust what I can plainly see. Amen.

The Shepherd's Own Voice

"My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me."

John 10:27 · ESV

A whole week of warnings about wolves, and the passage would leave us anxious if it stopped there. It doesn't. "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me." Sheep are not clever animals. They are not distinguished by their discernment. What protects them is not analytical skill — it is familiarity. They have heard that voice every day of their lives, and when it calls they come, and when a stranger calls they don't. That is the real defense against a wolf in shepherd's clothing. Not suspicion. Familiarity. So the practical answer to this whole sermon is almost disappointingly ordinary: be with him. Read his Word until his voice sounds like itself in your ears. Pray. Sit under faithful teaching. Stay close to his people. Do that for long enough and the counterfeits do not fool you, not because you have become an expert on wolves, but because you know your Shepherd — and he already knows you.

Good Shepherd, thank you that you know me and call me by name. Make your voice so familiar to me that no counterfeit gets a hearing. I do not want to merely avoid wolves; I want to know you. Amen.
