It All Begins with God

The sentence does not argue; it announces. “In the beginning, God created” — no defense offered, no proof laid out, no case built. Scripture simply opens with God already there, already at work, before there was a universe to notice him. Slow down on those first four words. Everything that exists hangs on them, and they ask you to start where the Bible starts: not with you, but with him.

James put the choice plainly on Sunday. Either God is eternal, or matter is eternal — and everyone believes something they did not watch happen. None of us were there at the beginning, so all of us are people of faith about where it all came from. He said he simply does not have enough faith to believe that order, meaning, and love assembled themselves out of nothing at all.

Hear what this verse does not ask of you. It is not handing you an argument to win at the dinner table, and it is not pitting faith against science — James noted that science itself leans on the ordered world a rational God made. Genesis 1:1 is not a court case for God's existence. It is the opening line of a cathedral built for his glory.

So let the day start where the chapter starts. Before your inbox, before the thing you are anxious about, before you have proven anything to anyone — God already is. You do not have to hold the world together or explain it into place. You get to live inside a story he began and still authors. Begin there, and the rest of the day finds its right size.

Before the first “let there be,” there is this: emptiness, deep water, and darkness over all of it. And into that dark, “the Spirit of God was hovering.” Not absent, not waiting for better conditions — present, close, moving over the face of the deep. Sit with the picture. Before there was any light to see by, God was already there, already near, already about to work.

James admitted this verse hit him like a Mack truck this week. He had read past it for years, and then it landed: before there was any order, before anything was made, God's Spirit was hovering — preparing to burst into the darkness with light and life. Whatever looks like a void in your life right now, he said, God is not absent from it. He is hovering over it.

This is not a promise that the dark is not real. The deep was real; the formlessness was real. Genesis does not pretend the emptiness away, and neither should you. What it says is that the darkness is not the last word and never has been, because it was never empty of God. His Spirit was there before the light, doing the quiet work that comes before anything visible changes.

So name your dark place — the career that stalled, the relationship that feels over, the season with no shape to it yet. Then remember what was true in verse 2. God is not waiting for you to fix it before he shows up. He is already hovering there, already at work before you can see a thing. What feels like nothing may be him, getting ready to begin.

Six times God looks at what he has made and calls it good. Here, at the close of the sixth day, the word grows: “behold, it was very good.” This is not a shrug of approval; it is delight. The Maker steps back and takes joy in the world he has spoken into being. Before anything is broken, before anything goes wrong, the verdict over creation is gladness.

James pulled two things out of that goodness on Sunday. First, we do not worship creation — the sun and moon are not gods, just a greater light and a lesser light made by the one who matters. Second, we do not neglect it. What God called very good, we are called to steward: to tend it, protect it, and bring him glory in a world he still loves.

Do not slide into either extreme. Calling the world very good is not permission to make it your god, chasing all your meaning from what you can see and hold. And it is not license to trash it as disposable. James named the deeper stakes: wherever God's people have gone, they have carried a culture of life, because the God of life called his world good.

So look at what is in front of you today — your work, your body, your corner of the world — and treat it as something God called very good and handed you to keep. You are not here to worship it or to waste it. You are here to steward it, and in doing that ordinary work well, to reflect the goodness of the God who made it.

The work of creation ends not with more work but with rest. On the seventh day God finishes, then stops — not because he is tired, but to set a rhythm into the world. He blesses that day and makes it holy, marking it off as different. Rest, Genesis says, is not the scrap left when work runs out. It is built into how things are made.

James put it in one line on Sunday: we work because God works, and we rest because he is in control. The seven-day week did not come from convenience or the calendar — he pointed out that when the French Revolution tried a ten-day week, it fell apart, and Napoleon quietly changed it back. The rhythm we still live by was set on the very first pages of Scripture.

Notice what rest is really confessing. It is not laziness, and it is not merely self-care. When you stop, you admit the world keeps going without your hands on it — that you are not the one holding it together. That is why rest is hard: it asks you to trust that God is in control of what you set down. Refusing to rest is often refusing to trust him.

So build a real stop into your week — not collapse, but rest that says God is in control and you are not. Close the laptop. Keep one day different. Let the unfinished things stay unfinished for a while, and watch the world hold together without you gripping it. The God who worked and then rested is inviting you into the same rhythm, and he means it for your good.

Into the dark, God speaks: “Let there be light.” He does not make it with his hands or shape it from something older — he says it, and it is. The light does not argue back. The whole of creation runs on this: a God whose word is enough, who calls what is not into being by speaking. The first thing he makes in the darkness is light.

James carried this to the cross on Sunday. The same God who said “Let there be light” later said, “I am the light of the world.” The hands that set the stars in the sky are the hands that hung on the cross. Creation was always leading here — to Christ, and to a love that made you not because he needed you, but because he wanted to.

This is the answer to the question a ballplayer asked James after chapel: why us? Why did God make any of it? Not because he was lonely or lacking — he was complete in himself. He made you for his glory and out of his love, and James was blunt: you will never find your purpose in what you achieve or own. It is not earned. It is received.

So end the week where all creation ends up — at the God who speaks light into the darkness and gave himself on a cross to bring you home. You do not have to manufacture your worth or light your way. The same voice that began everything is still speaking: come, be made new. Your purpose was never yours to achieve. It is his to give, and yours to receive.
