Where You Trust God Least

"“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?"

Matthew 6:25 · ESV

Pastor Drake preached this one from the Middle East, in between leading chapel services for soldiers on deployment. Then he asked the question that makes this passage personal. What keeps you up at night? What makes you toss and turn — your family, your finances, your future? And then the hard truth: what we worry about most is probably where we trust God least. Sit with that before moving on. Not as an accusation — as a diagnostic. Anxiety is not a moral failure to be scolded out of you. But it is information. The thing that runs on a loop at two in the morning is telling you where you have not yet been able to believe that God is good and in control. And if that is you, you are not alone. One in five Americans has been diagnosed with a mental health disorder. Anxiety medication use is at an all-time high. Nearly half of Americans feel more stressed this year than last. This is an age of anxiety. Jesus saw it coming.

What actually keeps you up at night? Name it plainly — and then ask honestly what it reveals about where you are struggling to trust God.

Father, you know exactly what runs through my mind when the lights go out. I am not going to pretend otherwise. Show me what my worry is telling me about my trust, and meet me there without shame. Amen.

Responsibility and Anxiety

"Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?"

Drake said something honest from the pulpit: there is a correlation between responsibility and anxiety. The more responsible you are, the more anxiety you are likely to carry. If you are a leader, a soldier, a parent, a provider, you feel the weight — and it costs you sleep. He knew because it happened to him. Grad school, working full time, starting a family. Sleepless nights that were not one night or one week or one month but years. It affected his health. He developed mouth ulcers. He slept badly. He was eventually diagnosed with the early signs of multiple sclerosis — which, of course, made him more stressed. "I wish I had known then what I know now," he said. "Anxiety and worry don't solve your problems. They multiply them." And then Jesus points at birds. They do not sow or reap or gather into barns, and your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? He is not mocking your responsibilities. He is asking who you think is actually carrying them.

What responsibility are you carrying as though the outcome depends entirely on you? What would change if you genuinely believed God was carrying it too?

Pray

Father, I carry things that were never mine to carry alone, and it is costing me. Teach me the difference between being responsible and being in control. You feed the birds. I believe you will not forget me. Amen.

Not One Hour

"And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?"

Jesus asks a question with no good answer: "Which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?" Nobody. That is the answer. Not one hour. Ever. By anyone. This is the most practical argument in the passage and the one we are least willing to hear, because worry feels productive. It feels like doing something. Lying awake rehearsing a conversation feels like preparation. Running the worst case forty times feels like being ready for it. It is not. It is the one activity with a guaranteed zero return, and Jesus says so plainly. Worry does not add an hour to your life. Drake's experience suggests it may quietly subtract a few — ulcers, sleeplessness, an immune system under siege. The alternative is not pretending you are fine. Biblical faith does not silence the anxious heart. It speaks truth to it. There is a real difference between suppressing a fear and answering it — and only one of them lets you sleep.

What has worrying actually accomplished for you this month? What would it look like to answer a fear with truth instead of rehearsing it?

Lord, I have treated worry as though it were doing something useful. It is not. When my mind starts its circuit today, help me answer it with what is true about you instead of running the loop again. Amen.

O You of Little Faith

"But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?"

Matthew 6:30 · ESV

Notice who Jesus is talking to. These are not people deciding between outfits or scrolling a dinner menu or choosing which bottle of water — costing more per gallon than gasoline — to waste their money on. Drake made the point plainly: these people live on the edge of a desert. They know exactly what happens when there is no water. Jesus tells people with real, immediate, physical need not to be anxious about food and water and clothing. Three times. And they were. So when he says "O you of little faith," hear the tone correctly. It is not contempt. It is the exasperated affection of someone who knows how thoroughly God has them and cannot get them to believe it. If God dresses the grass — here today, thrown into the oven tomorrow — how much more will he clothe you. Little faith is still faith. He does not send them away for having it. He just refuses to let them stay there.

Where has your faith gone small? What is one true thing about God's care you could put in front of it today?

Father, my faith is smaller than I would like to admit. Thank you that you do not dismiss little faith, you grow it. Clothe me, feed me, and grow my trust past where it stalled. Amen.

Seek First

"But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."

Matthew 6:33 · ESV

After all the diagnosis, Jesus gives one instruction. Not "stop worrying" — he knows that never worked for anybody. Instead: "Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." The cure for anxiety in this passage is not effort. It is reordering. Worry is what happens when secondary things move into first position. Food, clothing, money, reputation, the future — none of them evil, all of them real. But put any of them first and they will run your interior life, because a thing in first position is a thing you must secure yourself. Put the kingdom first and the rest does not vanish. It gets added. It goes back to being what it always was: important, but not ultimate, and not yours to guarantee. Drake started this passage with a "therefore," pointing back to the previous verse — you cannot serve God and money. That is still the issue. Not whether you have anxiety, but who is on the throne while you have it.

What has quietly moved into first place in your life? What would putting the kingdom back on top actually require of you this week?

Pray

Father, things that were meant to be secondary have taken first place and I feel it in my sleep. Put your kingdom back where it belongs. I will trust you for what gets added. Amen.
