The Thing Nobody Talks About

"“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal,"

Jeff Sullivan started where everybody actually is. Money is a strange subject. You don't talk about it with friends. You don't say what you earn or what you're worth — it would be rude. Imagine sitting across from someone and asking how much they make. Nobody does that. How many of you have never told your kids about your finances? He never knew what his parents earned. He had no idea whether they were rich or poor. Money was simply not discussed. And that silence, he said, creates a lot of unhealthy things. We are afraid to talk about it, so we don't. And because we never deal with it, we end up carrying badly mistaken ideas about money for years without ever examining them. Jesus was never afraid to talk about money. He was direct about it and found it easy to raise. So he starts here: do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy. Not because money is evil — because that particular vault has a hole in the bottom.

What have you never examined about money because it was never discussed? What did you absorb about it growing up?

Pray

Father, money is the thing I would rather not discuss, including with you. Bring it into the open. Show me what I have believed about it without ever examining it. Amen.

Your Heart Follows Your Treasure

"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

Matthew 6:21 · ESV

"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Read the order carefully, because it is the opposite of what we assume. We think the heart leads and the money follows — I care about this, therefore I fund it. Jesus says it runs the other way. Put your treasure somewhere and your heart will follow it there. That is startling, and it is enormously practical. It means your affections are not fixed. They are trainable, and the training happens through your bank account. Where you put money is where you will eventually care. Which means the question is not "do I care enough about this to give?" The question is "what do I want to care about?" Give there, and the caring shows up afterward. Jeff mentioned that everybody carries a story about money in their head — the kind of thing that surfaces in financial counseling, or in marriage counseling, which is often where it comes out. Your giving history is telling you that story out loud.

Look at where your money actually went last month. What does it say about where your heart is being trained to go?

Pray

Lord, my heart follows my treasure, and my spending shows me things about myself I would rather not see. Put my treasure where you want my heart to end up, and let my affections catch up. Amen.

The Lamp of the Body

"“The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light,"

Matthew 6:22 · ESV

Right between two verses about money, Jesus says something about eyes. "The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light." It seems like a detour. It isn't. In the way people spoke then, a "healthy" or "single" eye meant generosity, and a "bad" eye meant stinginess. Jesus is still talking about money — he is talking about how you *see*. And he says your seeing is not one compartment of your life. It is the lamp. Get your seeing wrong and it is not that one room goes dark. The whole body fills with darkness. That is why he will not treat money as a side issue or a practical matter separate from your spiritual life. How you look at what you have shapes everything — what you notice, what you fear, who you envy, how free you are. If the light in you is darkness, he says, how great is that darkness. There is no small mistake here.

Reflect

Would someone watching your life describe your eye as generous or as guarded? What in you is producing that?

Pray

Lord, let my eye be healthy. Where I look at what I have with a closed fist, open it. I do not want a darkness in me that I have mistaken for prudence. Amen.

Two Masters

"“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money."

Matthew 6:24 · ESV

"No one can serve two masters." Not should not. Cannot. Jesus is not issuing a warning here; he is describing an impossibility, the way you would describe water running uphill. And notice he does not say you cannot *have* money. He says you cannot *serve* both. Money makes a fine servant and a ruinous master, and everybody has one or the other arrangement whether they have named it or not. How would you know which you have? A few tests. What happens in you when money is threatened — does your peace go with it? What decisions are effectively made for you by financial considerations before any other factor gets a vote? What would you refuse to do for God if it cost you significantly? Jesus says you will end up loving one and hating the other, or holding to one and despising the other. There is no arrangement where both get to sit on the throne. The seat only holds one. The good news is that you get to choose which. Today, again.

Be specific: what recent decision was actually made by money rather than by conviction?

Pray

Lord, I want money as a servant and you as my master, and I know it drifts the other way without me noticing. Take the throne back today. Show me where I have been serving what I was meant to steward. Amen.

Grace Enough to Be Generous

"And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work."

2 Corinthians 9:8 · ESV

Jeff promised at the start that they would get here. By the end of our time, he said, we will see how generous God is with us — and that because of his generosity toward us, we can live a life of gratitude and generosity. That order matters more than anything else in this passage. Generosity that comes from guilt does not last. Neither does generosity that comes from obligation, or from wanting to look a certain way, or from a preacher's pressure. All of that burns out, and usually it makes you resentful on the way. Generosity that comes from gratitude is different. It is a response, not an effort. You are not producing something out of nothing — you are passing along what was handed to you first. And Paul makes the promise concrete: God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. He supplies the grace before he asks for the giving. That is always the order.

Is your giving currently a response to God's generosity or an obligation you are managing? What would move it from one to the other?

Pray

Father, you gave first and you gave everything. Make my giving a response and not a duty. Let gratitude do what pressure never could, and make me generous the way you have been generous with me. Amen.
