If You Can Fake That

"“And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words."

Matthew 6:7 · ESV

Kent opened with a line from the great American theologian and philosopher Julius Henry Marx — better known to us as Groucho. "The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing. If you can fake that, you've got it made." It is funny because it is exactly backwards, and exactly what we do. Jesus is after the same thing here. "When you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words." Empty phrases. Volume without content. The prayer equivalent of faking sincerity — saying the words that sound like praying while nothing underneath actually reaches for God. And notice the assumption he is correcting: they think they will be heard for their many words. As though prayer were a matter of accumulating enough of the right vocabulary to get a hearing. Your Father is not impressed by your fluency and he is not waiting for you to say it well. He knows what you need before you ask. Which means you can stop performing and just talk to him.

When you pray, are you talking to God or performing prayer? What would honest, unimpressive prayer sound like from you today?

Father, I can produce prayer-sounding words without actually praying. Forgive me. You already know what I need, so let me stop arranging it and simply talk to you. Amen.

Our Father

"Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name."

Matthew 6:9 · ESV

Two words in and the whole thing has already been reframed. "Our Father." Not "Almighty God" — though he is. Not "Sovereign Lord" — though he is that too. Father. Jesus hands his followers a family word and tells them to use it with the maker of the universe. And then immediately: "hallowed be your name." Hold both. Father, and holy. Close enough to call Dad, holy enough that his name is set apart from every other name there is. We usually lose one or the other. Some of us pray to a Father so casual he is barely worth listening to. Some of us pray to a Holiness so distant we would never presume on him. Jesus refuses to let us choose. The God who is utterly holy is the one you are invited to call Father, and the Father you come to is utterly holy. Also: *our*. Not my Father. Even alone in a room, Jesus teaches you to pray as one of a family. You are never praying by yourself.

Which half do you lose most easily — God's nearness as Father, or his holiness? What would praying with both look like?

Pray

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Teach me to come close without ever getting casual, and to revere you without ever going distant. You are both, and I need both. Amen.

Your Kingdom Come

"Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven."

Matthew 6:10 · ESV

"Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven." This is the most dangerous sentence most of us say without thinking. Because the prayer is not "bless my kingdom." It is not "help my plans succeed." It asks for a different kingdom to arrive and a different will to be done — and it does not exempt the small kingdom you have been quietly running. Kent has been saying all through this series that Jesus is countercultural, counterintuitive, against the prevailing wisdom then and now. Here it comes home. Praying this line means asking God to overturn things, starting with you. And notice the standard: on earth as it is in heaven. Not partially. Not eventually. As it is there — where his will is done completely, gladly, without negotiation. Most of us pray this every week. It is worth occasionally stopping at the words long enough to notice what we just volunteered for.

What in your life would have to change if 'your will be done' were answered fully this week?

Pray

Father, your kingdom come — including into the corners of my life where I have been running my own. Your will be done in me as completely as it is done in heaven. I mean it, and I know what I am asking. Amen.

Daily Bread

"Give us this day our daily bread,"

Matthew 6:11 · ESV

After the kingdom and the will of God comes bread. It is a startling turn. From the cosmic to the kitchen in a single line — and it tells you that the God whose name is hallowed also cares whether you eat. But notice the word: *daily*. Not weekly. Not a year's supply. Enough for today, asked for today, and then asked for again tomorrow. That is deliberate, and it is not how we would design it. We would prefer the storehouse. We would like security in advance, so we do not have to depend on anyone. Daily bread means coming back every single day. Which is, of course, the point. God is not primarily supplying groceries. He is building a relationship with people who need him, and need is the raw material. Kent prayed that morning for James Drake and 350 soldiers doing dangerous work in the Middle East, and for churches across a frozen country deciding whether it was safe to gather. That is what daily bread praying looks like — today's actual needs, named out loud, today.

What is your actual need today — not this year, today? Have you asked God for it plainly?

Pray

Father, give me this day my daily bread. Not the storehouse, not the guarantee — just today. Teach me to come back tomorrow and ask again, and to be glad that I need you. Amen.

As We Forgive

"and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors."

Matthew 6:12 · ESV

"Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors." That little word *as* has kept Christians awake for two thousand years, and it should. Jesus is the one who added it, and after the prayer ends he goes back and underlines it: if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. He does not soften it anywhere. This is not God trading forgiveness for forgiveness like a transaction. It is something more searching: a heart that has genuinely received mercy cannot hold a grudge with a straight face. If the forgiveness is real going in, it will be real coming out. When it doesn't come out, that is worth examining. So this is the line to pray slowly. Name the person. Notice what rises in you. And then remember what you are asking for yourself in the same breath — and how much larger your debt was than theirs.

Whose name comes up when you pray this line? What is the first step toward actually forgiving them?

Pray

Father, forgive me my debts — and you know exactly how large they are. Now do the harder work: make me someone who forgives the way I have been forgiven. I am naming the person to you now. Help me. Amen.
