When Seeing Is No Longer Believing

"Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart."

2 Corinthians 4:1 · ESV

Drake opened with something that had happened to him the day before. He was on his phone, opened social media, and saw the most incredible things happening — only to realize none of it was real. All of it was AI-generated. And it turns out AI is not only making videos now; it is creating voices and audio recordings too. Seeing and hearing are no longer believing. In a culture and a life changing this fast, sometimes it seems the only constant is change. It is hard to know what to believe, and hard to build your life on anything but shifting sand. Which is why we need values — things that anchor us in time-tested truths, so we do not drift and end up in places we never wanted to go, believing things that are not true. Paul says: "having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart." That is the posture for an age like this one. Not certainty about everything. A fixed point, and mercy, and the refusal to lose heart.

Father, in a world where I cannot trust what I see or hear, your Word has not moved. Anchor me. Keep me from losing heart in a season where so little is solid. Amen.

We Have Renounced Underhanded Ways

"But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God’s word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God."

2 Corinthians 4:2 · ESV

Drake played the church a montage of voices — some of it the prosperity gospel in its own words. *If I want to believe God for a $65 million plane, you can't stop me.* And against it, another voice: Christianity has been built and has endured across the generations on the blood of men, not on wealth. The cost of accepting the gospel might be your family. The people you love most in the world — you must love Jesus more. But it is worth it. Paul is dealing with the same distortion in Corinth. "We have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God's word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone's conscience." *Tamper with God's word.* That is what a message about your best life is — the real thing, adjusted, until it sells. The test Paul gives is the open statement of the truth. Not a technique. Not a hook. Just say what is actually there and let it do its own work.

Father, keep me from a version of your Word that has been adjusted to sell. Give me the courage of the open statement of the truth, including the costly parts. Amen.

Blinded Minds

"In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God."

2 Corinthians 4:4 · ESV

"In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ." This explains something that otherwise makes no sense: why the best news in the world so often lands on people as nothing at all. You have probably experienced it. You explain something that reoriented your entire existence, and the person across from you is politely unmoved. It is not that they disagreed. It is that nothing happened. Paul says there is a reason, and it is not their intelligence and not your inadequacy. There is active opposition, and the specific tactic is blindness — not argument, just an inability to see what is plainly there. That should do two things to you. It should take the pressure off, because you were never going to argue someone into sight. And it should drive you to prayer, because blindness is not something you can talk anyone out of. You are not failing. You are in a fight of a different kind than you thought.

Who have you been trying to persuade when you should have been praying for them? What would change if you did both?

Pray

Father, I have been arguing with blindness. Only you give sight. I bring you the person I cannot reach, and I ask you to open eyes I cannot open. Amen.

Not Ourselves

"For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake."

2 Corinthians 4:5 · ESV

Here is the church's greatest value, and the sermon's title question underneath it. "For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake." Drake said this is the message the church is built on — Jesus is our message, we preach Christ as Lord, and there is no other message besides that one. Read the verse again and notice how much of the modern religious landscape it rules out. Not ourselves. Not our platform, our story, our brand, our results, our best life. One name, and it is not yours. Which brings the actual question: who is your true Lord? Because a message that is finally about you will produce a faith that is finally about you — and that faith cannot survive a hard year. A message about Jesus as Lord produces servants, and servants are the only people who last. What do you proclaim, when you are not being careful? Whatever it is, that is what you actually believe is Lord.

When you talk about your faith, how much of it is about you? Who does the listener end up thinking about?

Pray

Lord Jesus, I want to be the point more than I admit. Take me out of the centre of my own message. You are Lord. Make me a servant for your sake. Amen.

Light Out of Darkness

"For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ."

2 Corinthians 4:6 · ESV

Paul finishes with an act of creation. "For God, who said, 'Let light shine out of darkness,' has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ." He reaches all the way back to Genesis 1, to the first word God ever spoke over a formless dark — and says the same thing happened in you. That is the answer to Wednesday's blindness. If the problem is that people cannot see, the solution is not better arguments. It is the God who invented light saying *let there be* over a human heart, one more time. And notice where the light lands: in the face of Jesus Christ. Not in an idea, or a doctrine, or a feeling. A face. Drake's whole point was that we need an anchor, a fixed point, a north star in a world where you cannot trust your own eyes. Here it is. Not a principle you could argue about, but a person — the glory of God, with a face, who can be known. That is the message. He is the Lord. Build on him.

When did God first turn the light on for you? Who in your life needs that same creative word spoken over them?

Pray

God who said let there be light, you spoke into my darkness and I saw. Do it again for the people I love who cannot see. Let them find your glory in the face of Jesus. Amen.
