True vs False Christianity: How to Know If Your Faith Is Real

In a culture where “being a Christian” can mean almost anything, one question matters more than ever:

? Is my faith actually real—or am I deceived?

Jesus gives a direct and sobering answer in Matthew 7:21–29:

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven…”

This isn’t a warning for outsiders.
It’s a warning for people inside the church.
So how do you know the difference between true Christianity and false (fake) Christianity?

⚠️ The Danger of Fake Christianity

Jesus describes people who:
  • Call Him “Lord”
  • Serve in His name
  • Do impressive spiritual works

And yet, He says:

“I never knew you. Depart from me…”

Let that settle.
? It is possible to:
  • Go to church
  • Speak Christian language
  • Serve in ministry
…and still not belong to Jesus.

This is the danger of false Christianity:
A life that looks right on the outside—but is empty at the core.

❌ What Is False (Fake) Christianity?

False Christianity is not always obvious.
In fact, it often looks very real.

Signs of False Christianity:

  • Trusting in good works instead of Christ
  • Saying the right things without real obedience
  • Knowing about Jesus without knowing Him
  • Wanting blessing without surrender
  • Living unchanged while claiming faith

At its core:
? False Christianity is built on self—not Christ.
It replaces relationship with performance.
It substitutes transformation with appearance.

✅ What Is True Christianity?

True Christianity is not about perfection—it’s about foundation.
Jesus says the one who enters the kingdom is:

“The one who does the will of my Father…”

That doesn’t mean earning salvation.
It means your life has been changed by it.

Signs of True Christianity:

  • Trust in Christ alone for salvation
  • A real relationship with Jesus
  • Growing obedience (not perfection, but direction)
  • Conviction of sin and repentance
  • A desire to follow Jesus as Lord—not just Savior

? True faith doesn’t just speak—it transforms.

?️ The Foundation Test: Rock vs Sand

Jesus makes this even clearer with a picture:
Two people build houses.

? The Rock (True Christianity)

  • Hears Jesus’ words
  • Obeys them
  • Builds on Christ

?️ The Sand (False Christianity)

  • Hears Jesus’ words
  • Ignores them
  • Builds on self

?️ The Storm That Reveals Everything

From the outside, both lives may look the same.
But the difference is revealed in the storm.

Jesus says a storm is coming.
This isn’t just about hard times in life.

? This is about final judgment.

And in that moment:
  • Titles won’t matter
  • Church attendance won’t matter
  • Good intentions won’t matter

Only one thing will matter:
? What was your life built on?

? Why So Many People Are Deceived

One of the most sobering truths of this passage is this:
? Many people think they are saved… but are not.

Why?
Because they confuse:
  • Activity with intimacy
  • Knowledge with transformation
  • Religion with relationship

It is possible to:
  • Admire Jesus
  • Agree with Jesus
  • Even serve Jesus
…and still never submit to Him.

? How to Know If Your Faith Is Real

This is where Jesus invites us into honest self-examination.

Ask yourself:
  • Am I trusting in Christ—or in myself?
  • Do I obey God’s Word, or just hear it?
  • Has my life actually changed?
  • Do I want Jesus—or just what He can give me?

? Real faith produces real fruit.
Not instantly.
Not perfectly.
But undeniably over time.

? How to Move From False Faith to True Faith

If you recognize areas of false foundation, the answer is not “try harder.”
The answer is start over—on the right foundation.

1. Repent - Turn from sin and self-reliance.
2. Trust in Christ Alone - Not your works. Not your effort.
? Only Jesus saves.
3. Surrender to His Lordship - You don’t just receive Him as Savior—you follow Him as King.
4. Build Daily on His Word - Not just hearing—but living it.

? Jesus Is Not Just a Teacher—He Is the King

At the end of this passage, people were astonished.
Why?

Because Jesus spoke with authority.
He didn’t say: “Here’s a suggestion”
He said:
? “This is the difference between life and destruction.”

Two options:
  • True Christianity or false Christianity
  • Rock or sand
  • Life or ruin

There is no middle ground.

? Final Word: What Are You Building On?

You can:
  • Look like a Christian
  • Sound like a Christian
  • Even feel like a Christian
…and still be building on sand.

But today, you can build on something that will never fall:
? Jesus Christ.
Not your performance.
Not your reputation.
Not your effort.
Only Him.
