An Eye for an Eye

"“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’"

Matthew 5:38 · ESV

First Sunday of a new year. A whole year ahead — new opportunities, new possibilities, new challenges, and certainly some obstacles to get over. And here is Jesus, helping sort out what we should and should not do with it. He starts by quoting a law people had learned to misuse. "You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.'" Here is what most people miss: that law was originally a restraint. In a world where an insult could escalate into a blood feud that buried three generations, "an eye for an eye" meant *only* an eye for an eye. It was a cap on vengeance, not a license for it. And by Jesus' day it had been turned around into a personal entitlement — a rule for getting even. We still do this. We take a limit God set for our protection and convert it into a right we insist on. Kent said Jesus is undoing the status quo, saying there is a new boss in town. He starts here, with our favorite arithmetic.

Where are you keeping score in a relationship right now — quietly tallying what you are owed?

Father, I am better at arithmetic than at grace. Show me where I have turned a limit into an entitlement, and where I am owed something I need to stop counting. Amen.

Do Not Resist

"But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also."

Matthew 5:39 · ESV

"But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also." People on that Galilean hillside two thousand years ago heard this and said what Christians have been saying ever since: Jesus said *what*? Did you really mean that? This is hard. Are you serious? And Jesus says: exactly. This is what you have heard, and this is what I say. One detail matters. The *right* cheek. A right-handed man striking your right cheek is not throwing a punch — he is backhanding you. In that culture that was not primarily an injury, it was an insult, the gesture of a superior putting an inferior in his place. So turning the other cheek is not passivity in the face of violence. It is refusing to accept the humiliation on its own terms — standing there as an equal and declining to answer contempt with contempt. That takes more strength than hitting back, not less.

When you were last insulted or belittled, what did you do with it? What would it have looked like to refuse the exchange without retreating?

Pray

Lord, my instinct is to return what I was given, with interest. Give me the strength that does not need to answer contempt with contempt. Amen.

Your Cloak as Well

"And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well."

Matthew 5:40 · ESV

"And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well." The tunic was the inner garment. The cloak was the outer one — and under the law of Moses, a man's cloak could not be kept overnight even as collateral, because it was what he slept under. It was legally protected. It was the one thing they could not take. Jesus says: give them that too. This is not a rule for civil litigation. It is a picture of how far a citizen of this kingdom is willing to go rather than let a possession become a battleground. Give away the thing you have every right to keep. And it is worth being clear that Jesus is not telling abused people to submit to abuse. He is dismantling the reflex to grip — the instinct that says *this is mine and I will fight you for it.* Because once nothing is essential, nobody has leverage over you. The person who will give up his cloak is the freest person in the room.

What do you hold with a grip that gives other people leverage over you? What would loosening it free you from?

Pray

Father, I hold things tightly and they end up holding me. Loosen my grip on what I have every right to keep, and make me free the way only open hands can be. Amen.

The Second-Mile Company

"And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles."

Matthew 5:41 · ESV

Kent asked the church: who do you know that you can genuinely count on? Ask them to do something, they say yes, and it is done — you do not think about it twice. You know she keeps her word. You know he delivers exactly what he says. He has a friend, Vi Lanzón, one of the best caterers around. If you can get Vi to handle your event you are in good hands. It is not cheap. But the motto of that kind of operation is: promise little, deliver much. Those are the people who go the second mile. That phrase comes from right here. Under Roman occupation a soldier could legally compel a civilian to carry his pack one mile. One. It was law, it was humiliating, and everyone resented it. Jesus says: carry it two. The first mile was his by force. The second mile is yours by choice — and that second mile is the only part anyone will remember. It is where obligation ends and something unmistakably different begins.

Where in your life are you doing exactly the required mile? What would the second mile look like there this week?

Lord, I do what is required and stop at the line. Show me one place this week to walk the second mile freely, and let somebody see the difference. Amen.

Give to the One Who Asks

"Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you."

Matthew 5:42 · ESV

"Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you." This is where the passage stops being theoretical, because now there is a person in front of you. And immediately we start looking for the exemption. Are they deserving? What will they do with it? Are they going to ask again? Aren't I enabling something? Every one of those questions may be reasonable, and every one of them can also be a way of never giving anything to anyone. Jesus does not answer them. He just says give. Which does not make you responsible for outcomes you cannot control, and does not make wisdom a sin. But it does mean the burden of proof has shifted. The default is open, not closed. You need a reason not to, rather than a reason to. A new year is as good a time as any to change a default. This whole passage has been about going beyond what is required, beyond what the world expects, beyond what is typical. An unreasonable way, for people following an unreasonably generous Lord.

When did you last say no to someone in need, and was the reason genuine wisdom or self-protection wearing its clothes?

Pray

Father, you gave to me before I deserved anything and without checking whether I would use it well. Change my default from closed to open, and give me wisdom that serves generosity instead of excusing me from it. Amen.
