Why Some Services Come Alive

"Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.”"

John 4:20 · ESV

Kent asked the question everyone in the room had wondered about and nobody says out loud. What makes one worship experience simply wonderful — glorious, edifying, transforming, the kind where you could stay for hours? And what makes another service drag terribly? Preachers know the signs. Back when men wore watches, there was a rule: if you saw people checking their watch, you were in trouble. And if you saw them *tapping* it to see whether it was still running — just say amen, close in prayer, and try to do better next week. He once sat in a seminary class on worship where, during a break, a dozen pastors from a dozen different traditions started asking each other the same thing. What actually makes a service come alive for us? And here is the Samaritan woman asking her version of it: our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say Jerusalem is the place. Where is the right room? Jesus is about to tell her she is asking the wrong question entirely.

Lord, I evaluate worship by how it felt to me. Reorder that. Teach me what you are actually looking for when your people gather. Amen.

Neither on This Mountain

"Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father."

John 4:21 · ESV

"Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father." She asked a location question. He dissolves the category. This was not a small thing to say. The Samaritans had their mountain, the Jews had their temple, and the argument between them was centuries old and genuinely bitter. It was the sort of dispute where everyone knows which side they are on and nobody expects it to be resolved. Jesus does not pick a side. He announces that the whole framework is about to be obsolete — because the one thing the temple did, he is about to do himself. God is coming to dwell with his people in a way that no longer requires an address. We still make her mistake in updated form. The right building. The right music. The right style, the right hour, the right seat. All of it can matter for good reasons, and none of it is what Jesus says the Father is seeking. The hour is coming, he says. And then: it is here now.

Father, I have attached my worship to conditions you never required. Loosen my grip on the externals so that I can worship you anywhere, including where it is not to my taste. Amen.

The Father Is Seeking

"But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him."

John 4:23 · ESV

Here is the phrase that should stop you: "the Father is seeking such people to worship him." Seeking. We usually picture worship running one direction — us reaching up, offering something, hoping it is received. This verse runs the other way. God is out looking. He is the one initiating, searching, wanting worshipers. And remember who he is saying it to. A Samaritan woman at a well in the middle of the day, alone, with a history that made the middle of the day the safest time to fetch water. She is not the person anyone would have identified as the object of a divine search. Jesus went out of his way through Samaria and sat at that well and waited for her. That is what "the Father is seeking" looks like in practice. Not an abstract preference for a certain kind of worship — a God who goes looking for particular people, including the ones the religious establishment had written off. If you worship him at all this week, it is because he came looking first.

Father, you are seeking worshipers, and you came looking for me before I ever looked for you. Thank you for going out of your way. Let my worship be a response, not an initiative. Amen.

In Spirit and in Truth

"God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”"

John 4:24 · ESV

"God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth." Two words, and we are usually strong in one and weak in the other. Spirit without truth is feeling with nothing underneath it. It can be genuinely moving and gradually become about the experience rather than about God — worship as a mood you go looking for on Sunday. Truth without spirit is correct and cold. Everything doctrinally in place and nothing in the room actually alive. You can hold a flawless position on God while having no warmth toward him at all. Jesus will not let us pick. *Must*, he says. Both. And the reason he gives is a statement about God's nature, not our preferences: God is spirit. Worship has to match the character of the one being worshiped. He is not primarily interested in the arrangement of the room, because he does not occupy rooms the way we do. So the question is not where you worship, or how well it is produced. It is whether the real you is engaging the real God.

Father, you are spirit, and you ask for worship that is both honest and true. Where I am cold, warm me. Where I am shallow, deepen me. I want to bring you the real thing. Amen.

Your Bodies as a Living Sacrifice

"I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship."

Romans 12:1 · ESV

If worship is not tied to a mountain or a temple, where does it happen? Paul answers: "present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship." Bodies. Not sentiments. Not an hour. The whole physical fact of your life — where you go, what you do with your hands, how you spend your Tuesday. And "living sacrifice" is a deliberate contradiction. Every sacrifice these readers knew about died. Paul says: stay on the altar and keep breathing. Which is harder, because a dead sacrifice cannot climb down and a living one can, and does, most days by about ten in the morning. This is where the week lands. Kent started with why one service soars and another drags — a fair question, and the wrong ultimate one. Jesus moved it from *where* to *who*, and Paul moves it from *when* to *always*. The service you attend is not your worship. It is the gathering of people whose lives already are.

Pray

Father, take my body, my hours, my ordinary week. I keep climbing off the altar. Put me back on it, and let my whole life be the worship you are seeking. Amen.
