75. 45:50 You know, sometimes that's what Christmas can feel like. A bit of a negotiation. Just trying to get through, figure out what we need, where we're going, how we're going to get there. You know, this is a busy season, isn't it? If you were driving here, you probably found some traffic tonight.
76. 46:06 The malls were packed. The shelves were empty. The commercials were endless. The music is on every radio station. Some of it's about Christ, but not all of it. I walked in Home Depot the other day, lots of Christmas before, zero nativity before, a lot of distractions. Some of us are excited about Christmas because tonight we get to go and celebrate, no to bueno, if that's our family.
77. 46:26 Some of us are sad because some of our members of our family are not with us to celebrate like they used to be. Other of us are going home to an empty house and we don't have family coming, so Christmas is a time of loneliness. There's a mix of feelings from highs and lows that we all have around this amazing season.
78. 46:43 If we're not careful, we'll forget what it's all about. And then this is a hustle and bustle. We'll forget that really what tonight is about is heaven bursting forth and interrupting and entering into our crazy world and causing us to slow down and reflect on our greatest need and meeting.
79. 47:01 And the angels appear and they say, I've got great news, a great tool. But sometimes we don't feel that way and sometimes we just forget altogether. But the beauty of Christmas is this. God, Emmanuel, is with us.
80. 47:17 He didn't forget us. He came to a remote village to the most unlikely people and was born in the most unlikely way. And if he did it in their day, there's no reason he can't continue to work in that way in our day. And if you're someone who feels forgotten, overlooked, misunderstood, or you just got some regrets in your life, then you are the person that the Christmas story is for.
81. 47:41 Because it was written to a bunch of shepherds. Did you catch that? The shepherds were out in the field is what verse 8 said. And there, they were just doing their job, working the night shift. One of their buddies stayed up so the rest of them could get some sleep.
82. 47:58 You know, they were needed and they were important, but they were often forgotten. Kind of like maybe the person who bags your groceries at the store. Or maybe the person who takes out the trash. Do you know their name? No one knew the shepherds name.
83. 48:15 They were just kind of out there. Appreciated, but better when they were out there. In fact, they weren't even allowed to testify in court. Their witness wasn't considered reliable. Maybe it was because they were uneducated.
84. 48:30 Maybe it was because they were just good at telling stories. Nobody knew where the story ended and the truth began. Who knows? But I'm sure these shepherds didn't think too highly of themselves. They certainly weren't wealthy then. In fact, they probably didn't even own the sheep that they were looking out for.
85. 48:47 But they were good at them for the most part. They were making an honest way. They were working hard. Well, the lineage of shepherds, it's a respectable lineage. Abraham, Father Abraham, he was a shepherd. Jacob, the father of all of Israel, a shepherd.
86. 49:08 Moses, the leader of Israel, a shepherd. King David, the mightiest king, some would argue of all time, certainly the most famous, a shepherd. And who does God choose to reveal this wonderful announcement to, this good news of great joy for all the world?
87. 49:29 Shepherds. Those who are overlooked, undervalued, but important. And the shepherds, when they look up, they see the first perhaps UFO sighting ever recorded in history.
88. 49:45 A host, a heavenly host, a multitude, praising God and declaring. And what do they do? They're shocked. The scripture says they're afraid. Listen, listen, listen, listen, listen. I have a response when people see angels in scripture.
89. 50:02 You know, has anybody seen those little cherubs? Those little fat, naked little things in our work? Anybody? We can admit it here. It's okay. They look kind of like baby Michelin tire boys, you know? Fluffy, looks like the burger baby with wings, kind of. Yeah, that has about as much to do with biblical angels than maybe Easter eggs have to do with the resurrection.
90. 50:23 There's a bit of a disconnect. I looked into it today, and it turns out it's just a form of Greek mythology that for whatever reason during the Renaissance, they enjoyed painting. So that's how we've got this concept of cherubim. But biblically, you have cherubim and you have angels. Cherubim, you'll see outside of the Garden of Eden in Genesis chapter 3, flaming arrows protecting the garden so that we can no longer enter.
91. 50:48 We see them on top of the Ark of the Covenant that housed the very will of God. We read about them in Psalm 91 and elsewhere in Ezekiel in that they were holding up the honor and glory of our Lord. And so the cherubim are definitely like mighty creatures.
92. 51:05 They're doing a very important work and they have nothing to do with soft, fluffy, white little babies with wings. Or the rabbit. And then we have angels. Anytime an angel showed up, man, people just dropped down.
93. 51:21 We're always shuddering. Even 2 Kings, one angel took out 185,000 Assyrian soldiers. One angel and one man. So these were mighty creatures. They were super sympathetic. If I recall correctly, Peter fell asleep in jail and he thought he was dreaming, but he actually got kicked in the side by Daniel.
94. 51:39 Angel didn't gently wake him up. He said, get up, let's go. And so they were courageous warriors. You don't see a lot of sympathy out of angels. We see them in Revelation chapter 5 in particular where it says thousands upon thousands of them are praising God and declaring His glory.
95. 51:57 But rarely do we see them in the scripture. And we never see them in a warm, comforting sense because children and angels, they protected God's glory and they declared His holiness and His goodness. And isn't it ironic that these mighty beings that God created are the very ones that are now proclaiming this message of mercy to those of us who bear the very image of God.
96. 52:24 It's incredible. And we never see a concentration of angels like this anywhere else in scripture. In the back part of town in Bethlehem where there's maybe 300 people that want to, like shepherds out in the field. It's just crazy how God works sometimes.
97. 52:42 But elsewhere in scripture it says when the fullness of time came, that's when Christ appeared. But I mean, if you were trying to get a message out, you probably want to go talk to the really influential people, the smart people, the people of power, right? Because that's how you get a message out. But that's not how God got His message out.
98. 52:58 He went to those unlikely people, and the most unlikely places, through the most unlikely means, to bring out His message. So that in the end, only He could get the glory. You know, the Apostle Paul talks about that in 1 Corinthians chapter 1, where he says God often uses the foolish and weak things of the world to shame the wise.
99. 53:18 In the end, He gives all the glory. And He works in mysterious and marvelous ways. I guess as I was thinking about that today, I was struck with awe and wonder of just the miracle of this whole story. But I was left with hope knowing that that my story and your story isn't over yet even.
100. 53:35 And there's no telling what God can do and what He will do. But the promise of Scripture is that He works in unlikely ways, through unlikely people, through the most unlikely means. And our job is to trust Him and to declare His glory. And that's exactly what the angels do.
101. 53:51 That's exactly what the shepherds do. That's certainly what the Magi do. And that is the example that Joseph and Mary set for us in Scripture by the Lord. You know, two nights ago, I was hanging out with my family and we turned on this amazing show called The Greatest Christmas Pageant Ever.
102. 54:12 Raise your hand if you've seen it. Okay. I won't mess it up for the majority of you who haven't. I highly encourage you to check it out this Christmas. It's this story about this church that's celebrating its 75th Christmas pageant.
103. 54:30 And this year, for whatever reason, the Hermans are very interested. It all started as they were stealing somebody's lunch at school. And he's like, I don't care if you take my lunch. I can get all the food, donuts, cakes, whatever I want at church. And if you ever come to church, you'll probably melt.
104. 54:47 Well, the Hermans didn't like that, so they took the challenge. And they showed up at church, and that particular day, they announced the Christmas pageant. And they're kind of a major up to the family. It's a big, it's a bunch of kids with no parent figures. They're basically going up like modern day orphans. It's the back side of town.
105. 55:02 Just hard pressed, hard knocked, not well behaved or educated. And they're there, and the oldest one of them, kind of a major up to the family, she's going to be 10, 11 years old, sees a picture of Mary on the wall holding Jesus, and above it says, Emmanuel.
106. 55:18 And in that moment, she's just captured by that picture. She's drawn to him. And so she walks over to him, and she says, what's this about? And I'm like, oh, it's the Christmas castle that we're going to do. And who's this? The Mary. And she says, that's who I'm going to be. So then she and all her brothers grant everybody else that if they volunteer to be marriages or any of the parts they want to play, they're going to get it.
107. 55:41 And so this is the Herbmans doing their thing. They come in and hijack the whole Christmas play, and the town is very upset about this. But the Christmas director, for whatever reason, just says, no, we're going to see this through, and no one else volunteers, so the Herbmans are going to do it. And throughout the rest of the movie, you'll sense the plot and it twists and turns along the way.
108. 56:01 But it's called The Greatest Christmas Pageant Ever. And here's what I was just, I mean, I honestly, I don't cry much, but I was kind of getting emotional watching. It was a silly movie. But the beauty of it was this, is that the Herbmans really reflected the very people that we've been telling the Christmas story.
109. 56:19 These shepherds were just common, everyday people, not well-educated, probably not well-behaved, and certainly didn't smell too good. This was the Herbmans. And when they heard the Christmas story for the first time, they were indignant. Like, Herb wants to kill him? We should kill him. You know? And every time they've done something horrific in the Christmas story, the Lord would be like, my God!
110. 56:38 And they're like, who can't think they were as David like that in church? But she was just sincerely responding, like, did this story's capturing her heart? She was so deeply moved by it. And then the brothers, they didn't have any use for frankincense and myrrh. Who needs that?
111. 56:53 So they took what was the greatest thing of value to them, food, a Christmas ham that was delivered to the family. And that Christmas, they walked down as the Magi, and everybody's just like, what did they carry? And they put down this huge ham in front of baby Jesus.
112. 57:11 It's really something beautiful. And then the head hermit, she's holding baby Jesus, and a tear that starts to come out of her eye as they sing silent night. In that moment, the church realized this, in fact, was not the worst Christmas pageant ever, but the greatest Christmas pageant ever.
113. 57:33 And the Germans have changed the script and written the story in a different way. And isn't it funny how some people that are so far from God can see God better than those of us who hear God all the time. This Christmas, may we not lose the wonder of this story.
114. 57:52 As Jesus is declared, He's called the Savior, the Christ, and the Lord. Savior is just that. He is one who saves. Matthew 1.21 says, I bring you good news and great joy for today.
115. 58:09 A Savior has been warning He will save you from your sins. You see, in the Old Testament, a Savior was somebody to go and rescue God's people when they had no hope for not saving. Then, on top of that, He's called the Christ, which wasn't His last name.
116. 58:30 It was a title. He was the anointed, the chosen. You see, in the Old Testament, if you were anointed, well, you were anointed as a prophet to declare God's word to His people. Or you would be anointed as a priest to intercede on behalf of God's people.
117. 58:50 Or you would be anointed as king to lead God's people. You see, when He was declared the Messiah, He's the true priest, the true prophet, and the true king. He's the one that they've been longing for and waiting for. May we never lose that wonder and awe in the story.

That word, Kyrios, in Greek, which is what the Septuagint used to translate the Old Testament, every time they took the name of God, Yahweh, they translated capital L-O-R-D, which is curious, Lord.
