What Jesus Really Means About Judging - Matthew 7:1-6
In a world filled with judgment and criticism, Jesus offers a radically different approach to how we should treat others. His teaching about not judging doesn't mean abandoning moral discernment, but rather recognizing that ultimate judgment belongs to God alone. We don't have the complete picture that God has - we see actions and hear words, but only God sees the heart.
Jesus warns of a boomerang effect where the standards we use to judge others will be applied to us. However, the gospel offers something far superior to karma. While karma says we get what we deserve, grace means we don't get what we deserve and we do get what we don't deserve. God had every right to judge and exclude us, but instead chose to become one of us through Jesus Christ, making inclusion in His family possible.
The vivid imagery of trying to remove a speck from someone's eye while having a log in your own highlights how absurd our critical behavior can be. Jesus reserves His harshest words not for sinners who know they're sinners, but for hypocrites who pretend they're not. Before we can effectively help others, we need to address our own spiritual condition first. The church should be known as a place where broken people find healing and hope, not judgment and condemnation.
